"Surround yourself with positive people who believe in your dreams, encourage your ideas, support your ambitions, and bring out the best in you." Roy Bennett
Hello! My name is Shelby Brekhus. I am a senior at the University of Mary double majoring in Elementary Education and Special Education. I will graduate from in the Spring of 2022. I have gained so much knowledge about education through practicums, volunteering, and so much more. These experiences have made me confident in my career path as a future educator. I have such a strong passion for education! I love working with children of all ages and watching that spark go off in their minds when something 'clicks' while learning! Education has always been an interest of mine since I was a little girl! My best friend's mom is a 3rd grade teacher. We always were in her classroom at a young age 'playing teacher' and at a much older age while we helped set up her classroom for the year!
Growing up in a small town, I was involved in the community and the school. I volunteered for our school backpack program. Each week my friends and I would fill back packs full of food and school supplies for students who may need extra support at home. I learned how important community is, especially in education. We didn't have much to do, so we usually traveled for fun activities. I love to go hiking, skiing, going on walks with my dogs, and most of all spend time with my friends and family. They have supported me through this amazing path of education and encourage me to be my best!
I always new I wanted to see more of the world. University of Mary gave me this opportunity by traveling abroad in Rome, Italy. Here I experienced different culture, grew in my Faith, my education, and opened my mind to different perspectives and ideas! Studying abroad taught me to learn from my future students about their culture and traditions. As I continue to grow in education, I plan to always keep my mind open to different ideas and opportunities that the education world has to offer!
